Note(s): AfuB is a pseudogene candidate in E. coli K-12. The orthologous gene from E. coli O157:H7 encodes a protein of 692 amino acid residues; afuB from strain K-12 contains an N-terminal deletion compared to the O157 encoded ortholog Homma K,2002. afuBC is a remnant operon; a complete afuABC gene cluster is present in a wide range of bacteria and encodes a binding-protein dependent transport system initially implicated in Fe3+ uptake (afu: Actinobacillus ferric uptake) 8807793, but now believed to transport sugar phosphates 26295949. E. coli K-12 does not contain an afuA ortholog.
Comment from ASAP: The coordinates of afuB have been changed from those reported in the GenBank entry (GBAN:U00096.2) to correspond to the region of similarity to Escherichia coli EDL933 (ASAP:ABH-0024350), removing 14 nucleotides from the N-terminus.
