Detailed: In the presence of allantoin and the absence of glyoxylate, AllR negatively regulates the expression of genes required for glyoxylate and allantoin catabolic and assimilation pathways. Under these conditions, AllR is modified to AllR-(S)-allantoin, binds to its target sites, preventing the expression of its regulated genes. In the absence of allantoin and glyoxylate, AllR unbinds its target sites, enabling the expression of its regulated genes.
