Fis DNA-binding transcriptional dual regulator

Summary:
Fis, "factor for inversion stimulation", is a small DNA-binding and bending protein whose main role appears to be the organization and maintenance of nucleoid structure through direct DNA binding and by modulating gyrase [77, 78]and topoisomerase I production [67] as well as regulation of other proteins that modulate the nucleoid structure, such as CRP, HNS, and HU. Fis directly modulates several cellular processes, such as transcription, chromosomal replication, DNA inversion, phage integration/excision, and DNA transposition [1, 76] As a transcriptional regulator, Fis regulates the expression of many genes involved in translation (rRNA and tRNA genes), virulence, biofilm formation, energy metabolism, stress response, central intermediary metabolism, amino acid biosynthesis, transport, cell structure, carbon compound metabolism, amino acid metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, motility, and chemotaxis [1, 10, 79] A transcriptome analysis has shown that transcription of approximately 21% of genes is modulated directly or indirectly by Fis [77] Fis, together with proteins such as HNS, HU, IHF, and Dps, is one of the largest components of the nucleoid.
