Fur DNA-binding transcriptional dual regulator

Synonyms: Fur-Fe2+, Fur-Mn2+, Fur
Summary:
The transcriptional activator FUR, for Ferric Uptake Regulation, is capable of controlling its own synthesis [6, 10, 27, 33]and controls the transcription of genes involved in iron homeostasis [6, 7, 8, 10, 20, 24, 29, 30, 48, 55, 56]and a minor sigma factor that initiates transcription of ferric citrate transport genes in response to the presence of periplasmic iron(III) dicitrate [6, 20, 21] This regulator also participates in the regulation of transcription of many other genes involved in different cellular functions, including the following: flagellum chemotaxis [12] methionine biosynthesis [12] acid and oxidative stresses [8, 44] metal ion stress [38, 42, 54] resistance to cobalt and nickel [57] the tricarboxylic acid cycle [15, 32] glycolysis and gluconeogenesis [8] respiration [12, 15, 32] porins [15] purine metabolism [12] 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate biosynthesis [13] and phage DNA packaging [8] Based on transcriptome analysis, expression levels of a set of genes regulated by Fur change substantially in response to antibiotic treatment [58] Iron homeostasis influences the evolution of ciprofloxacin resistance [58]
FUR is a transcriptional repressor but also can be an activator; the positive regulation of this regulator is mediated by the indirect effect of RhyB, which is an antisense small RNA [43, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63]
FUR is a sensor of the concentration of intracellular iron, and the genetic repression occurs when the physiological inducer, iron (Fe2+), binds to FUR.
